Millglaze Fence Finishing

What Is Millglaze?

Millglaze is one of the most overlooked issues when it comes to new wood fences. It’s invisible to most homeowners, but if not handled properly, it can prevent stain or paint from penetrating the wood. The result is a finish that fades early, peels unevenly, or simply doesn’t last.

Millglaze is a thin, glossy layer that forms on wood during the milling process. When lumber is cut and processed at high speeds, the heat can seal the surface of the wood, creating a hardened outer layer.

This layer may not be visible at first glance, but it acts as a barrier. Instead of allowing stain to soak in, it causes coatings to sit on top of the surface.

Over time, this leads to premature wear and uneven results.

Why Millglaze Needs to Be Removed

Applying stain or paint over millglaze is one of the main reasons fence finishes fail early. Even high-quality products won’t perform properly if the wood surface hasn’t been prepared.

Removing millglaze allows:

  • Proper absorption of stain into the wood
  • More even color and consistency
  • Stronger adhesion for longer durability
  • Better resistance to weather and UV exposure

Skipping this step may save time upfront, but it almost always results in more maintenance and rework later.

Why Work With Fence Painters

Fence finishing is not just about applying stain. It’s about preparing the surface correctly so the finish performs the way it should.

We focus on:

  • Proper wood preparation before every job
  • Consistent, even application techniques
  • Products that are suited to the specific wood type and exposure
  • Results that last, not just look good on day one

Most issues with fence staining come from poor preparation. We make sure that step is done right.
